On Thursday, January 25th, 2018, leaders from within the County of Fresno and the Sheriff - Coroner’s Office held a ceremony to break ground on the West Annex Jail Project.
The new facility will be located at the corner of Merced and L Streets in downtown Fresno. It will feature three floors, a full basement and a total of 300 beds. It will include a mixture of small and medium capacity housing units to accommodate a variety of inmate classifications and treatment opportunities. It will also feature a day reporting center, offices for administrative staff and space for laundry services.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $101.8 million. Bonds secured as a result of Senate Bill 1022 are funding $79.2 million of the project. The County of Fresno has set aside the required funds needed to pay for the rest of the project. The county has awarded the construction contract to Bernards Brothers Inc. The estimated date of completion is July 2020.
Once the West Annex Jail is complete, the Sheriff’s Office will close down its South Annex Jail. The 499 bed facility was built in 1941 and is located at the corner of Fresno and M Streets in downtown Fresno.
The public should be aware of there being limited street parking available in the immediate area during the duration of the entire project.
