Detectives have arrested 20-year-old Gustavo Hernandez of Fresno and booked him into the Fresno County Jail.
He faces two felony counts of attempted murder and a felony count of carjacking. Detectives interviewed Hernandez and learned that he worked with one of the victims, 23-year-old Tony Sanchez, and they were said to be friends. The motive for Hernandez’ act of violence still has not been established.
On Sunday at 4:00 am, deputies were dispatched to a 911 call at home on the 4600 block of S. Cedar Ave. in Fresno. The caller reported that a woman had come to his door with a cut to her neck and she was bleeding profusely. Deputies found the victim, 21-year-old Francisca Sanchez, who had walked to her neighbor’s house. Sanchez was not able to speak due to her neck injury, however, she had written a note which told deputies information about her attacker and directed them to check her nearby home. Deputies went to Sanchez’ house and found her husband (Tony Sanchez) inside, lying face down. Tony Sanchez was unconscious and had suffered severe blunt force trauma to his head after being hit with an unknown object. Paramedics rushed both victims to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. The couple’s 3-year-old goddaughter was also in the house, but she was not injured. The girl is now in the care of relatives.
Homicide detectives and patrol deputies gathered information at the scene and discovered Gustavo Hernandez was the primary suspect and that he had stolen the victim’s vehicle. Later in the afternoon, detectives visited an apartment complex on the 7600 block of N. Angus in Fresno and found Hernandez inside an apartment unit with his girlfriend. Detectives arrested Hernandez without incident.
Both victims remain hospitalized and are expected to survive.
