Homicide detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate.

He has been identified as 19 year old Lorenzo Herrera of Reedley.  The Coroner’s Office has ruled his manner of death to be homicide.  A cause of death is not being released at this time.

At 12:05 pm on March 24th, correctional officers in the Fresno County’s Main Jail found inmate, Lorenzo Herrera, injured inside of a cell.  Medics attempted to revive Herrera and pronounced him deceased at 12:28 pm.  Sheriff’s homicide detectives were notified and responded to begin an investigation.

Detectives have interviewed and continue to speak with inmates, correctional staff and medical staff inside the jail.  They are also reviewing surveillance video from the pod where Herrera was housed.  Cameras do not record video inside individual cells.  Detectives have not made any arrests at this time.  A motive has not been established, but there is a possibility this homicide is gang-related.  This remains an ongoing investigation.

Lorenzo Herrera was booked into jail on January 17, 2018.  He was facing felony charges of burglary and assault on an officer for his role in a hot prowl burglary at a home in Kingsburg.
