Undersheriff Steve Wilkins swears in the new class

On Wednesday, May 4th, the Fresno County Sheriff – Coroner’s Office (FSO) swore in 30 new reserve deputies as part of a ceremony where a total of 38 students graduated the Sheriff’s Academy.

It took place at the Satellite Student Union Building on the Fresno State campus. The key note speaker was former Fresno County Sheriff Steve Magarian.

In 1959, the Fresno County Sheriff – Coroner’s Office partnered with Fresno State’s Criminology 108 program to teach students the basics of campus security. Today, it’s grown into a valuable training tool which prepares young men and women for a career in law enforcement. The program is the only one of its kind offered at any community college, state school or university in California. It has produced many high ranking members in the law enforcement profession both locally and nationally, including current FSO Undersheriff Steve Wilkins.

The Sheriff’s Academy is broken up into four semesters (two years).  While in school, students complete two of the modules needed to become a peace officer. During this time, many of the students will gain an internship at the FSO. This partnership allows the students an opportunity to get real life on the job experience and it gives the FSO a chance to get to know the person and their abilities. Once these students graduate, they are qualified to complete the final module, which makes them eligible to be hired as a sworn law enforcement officer. While working to achieve that goal, the FSO is able recruit graduates to itsagency to serve as reserve deputies.

As reserves, they perform essential functions such as: Transporting and guarding inmates, assist sworn deputies on patrol and work special detail at community events.  To qualify for the program, students must enroll through the Fresno State Criminology 108 program, they must be 21 by the time of graduation, be a U.S. citizen and have a valid driver license. They also have to pass a polygraph test, psychological assessment, medical exam and a background check.
