At 5:45 pm on August 1st, Fresno Police brought 57 year old Lorin Kane of Fresno into the Fresno County Jail.
He was facing several misdemeanor charges, including battery, drunk in public and resisting arrest. Kane was placed in a pre-booking holding cell before receiving a citation so he could be released. Around 7:15 pm, correctional officers found Kane unresponsive on the floor of the cell. Officers immediately gave Kane medical attention while requesting additional resources for medical aid. Kane was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Homicide detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and investigators with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office responded to the hospital to begin an investigation into this “in-custody death.”
There were five other people inside the holding cell with Kane. Detectives spoke with them and at this time there is no evidence to show they played a role in his death.
Staff at the Coroner’s Office have since conducted an examination of Kane’s body, but have not yet ruled a cause of death. It is pending the results of toxicology tests.
