5/4/17 - On the morning of Thursday, May 4, 2017, a California State parole agent went to the Riverbend Mobile Home Park located on the 17000 block of E. Kings Canyon Road in Sanger.

Hwy. 180 & Piedra Rd.

The agent was there to contact a wanted parolee, who is a 21 year old man. During the initial contact between the agent and suspect, the suspect ran away.  A few minutes before 8:00 am, the agent made a request over the radio to have deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office assist with finding him.  The agent told deputies that the suspect was believed to be carrying a gun.  Deputies arrived and saw the suspect on foot along Highway 180, between Piedra Road and Lone Oak Avenue.  The suspect ran from them through a vineyard to the south, toward a home.  A deputy was able to stop him from running further south and forced him to go back north.  Another deputy confronted the suspect on the shoulder of Hwy. 180 at Lone Oak.  The veteran deputy ordered the suspect to surrender, but he refused and the deputy fired multiple rounds from his rifle, striking the suspect.  It’s unknown what exactly occurred during the confrontation to cause the deputy to shoot.  Deputies quickly began to give the suspect medical aid as requests were made for ambulances and the Skylife helicopter to respond.  The helicopter picked up the suspect and flew him to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.  The suspect underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition.  His identity is not available for release at this time.

Detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and members of its Crime Scene Unit responded to collect evidence and interview witnesses.  They did locate a gun, which the suspect was carrying.  A make and model of the firearm has not yet been determined. This officer involved shooting remains an ongoing investigation.

No law enforcement personnel sustained any injuries.  The deputy who fired his gun has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
