Members of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit have identified 20 year old Jose Mendoza Cortez of Kerman as the man shot and killed on Saturday, September 19th.

Shortly after 10:00 pm on Saturday, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to help a shooting victim at the intersection of Yuba and Placer Avenues in Kerman.  A SkyLife helicopter landed and transported Jose Mendoza Cortez to the hospital where he later died.

A passenger told deputies that Cortez was driving and a car passed them on Placer Ave.  Someone in that car fired multiple shots at their vehicle, striking Cortez.  He was able to stop the vehicle after veering off the road.  A 911 call was then made to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives are investigating this as possibly being a gang-related shooting.  No arrests have been made.  Detectives are asking community members to contact our office if they have any information to help with the investigation.
