On Tuesday, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office and County of Fresno announced the opening of its news West Annex Jail.
It is located on Merced Street, next to the current North Annex Jail and Main Jail in downtown Fresno.
It features 300 beds, several classrooms, exercise yards, medical clinics, enhanced officer safety features, laundry facilities, video visitation stations and observation and safety cells.
Ground was broken on the facility in 2018. The project totaled $100 million. A state grant covered $80 million of the cost.
It replaces the South Annex Jail, which was constructed in 1941. The South Annex will officially close later this month. While it will not house incarcerated persons, it will remain standing for the time being.
Effective December 14, 2024, the South Annex Jail has permanently closed and has been replaced by the new West Annex Jail located at 2208 Merced Street in downtown Fresno. A schedule for visiting incarcerated persons in the West Annex Jail can be found on the following page.
