One year ago, the lives of two Fresno County Sheriff's Correctional Officers and their families forever changed.
A gunman shot CO Toamalama Scanlan and CO Juanita Davila as they worked inside the Fresno County Jail. Thanks to a quick response to the main jail lobby, both were rushed out for medical care. At the time, no one knew if they would survive. Today, we are both proud and grateful to report that they are both alive and making great progress in their recovery efforts. There are not enough words to express the appreciation for the actions of first responders that day. From sheriff's deputies, correctional officers, dispatchers and Fresno Police officers to EMTs, paramedics and hospital staff, they all played critical roles in saving the lives of Malama and Juanita.
It has been quite a journey for Malama. He spent considerable time at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and was then transferred to UC San Francisco, TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston and is now currently receiving neurologic therapy at Care Meridian in Littleton, CO. Through his determination, his family's support, their faith and the great care by medical professionals, Malama is making small improvements each day. We believe that one day he will return to his home, where he belongs.
Juanita returned home after spending two weeks at Community Regional Medical Center. Below is a statement she wants to send out to everyone.
"I am doing well, 'Praise God.' I continue to stay positive and am taking things one day at a time. I am continuing my treatment and it's going very well. I am blessed to know that my community still continues to pray for Scanlan and me. I am so thankful to be here with my family and enjoy each and every day. I am truly thankful for all of my friends, especially all of my co-workers at the Fresno County Sheriff's Jail Division. I love you all."
