The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office wants to make the public aware of an ongoing phone scams.
We have received multiple reports of people making random phone calls and identifying themselves as law enforcement officials, some of whom claim to be with the Sheriff’s Office.
These scammers attempt to instill fear in the people they call. Some threaten people by saying they have active warrants and have failures to appear in court. The callers tell their targets that they must pay fines, which can total hundreds or thousands of dollars. If they don't pay, they're told they will be arrested and put in jail.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office wants to make it clear to the public that it never makes solicitations for money or asks for the payment of fines over the phone.
Investigations into these matters are ongoing. It has not been determined if the same group is behind all of the fraudulent calls. Many of these groups are difficult to track. As a precaution, the Sheriff's Office advises you not to give in to the caller’s demands and you should simply hang up the phone.
