Property crimes detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 20 year old Marcos Nanez of Fresno.
He is currently in the Fresno County Jail facing felony charges of robbery and possession of stolen property. Nanez is also being held on other charges related to a Fresno Police investigation.
Just before 6:30 am on Sunday, April 15th, 2018, a man in his early 60s was riding his bicycle north along Friant Road. Shortly after passing Sumner Peck Ranch Winery, the man noticed a light-colored, older model compact SUV on the shoulder of the road with its hood up and rear hatch open. Two men were standing near the vehicle. As the bicyclist attempted to pass by, one of the men rushed toward him. He later woke up to medical personnel and citizens helping treat his injuries, which included a wound to his head, a fractured arm and collarbone. The man’s bike and wallet were gone, which held his badge identifying him as a retired officer with the California Highway Patrol. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Property crimes detectives began an investigation. On April 18th, an employee at a business contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report finding a wallet. Inside was a badge and ID matching those taken from the victim. Detectives collected it as evidence. Also on this day, detectives followed a lead on the whereabouts of the stolen 2004 Ridley Excalibur Carbon Fiber bicycle and were able to recover it. Detectives then developed information about a man who may have stolen the bike and worked to track him down. They later identified Marcos Nanez as the primary suspect in the case. Detectives located Nanez, interviewed him and arrested him for his role in the robbery of the bicyclist on Friant Road.
The victim’s health has improved since the day of the robbery and he is still working to try and make a full recovery.
