K9 CodyThe Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is sad to report that its retired narcotic K9 partner “Cody” has died.

Earlier this week, a veterinarian euthanized Cody due to a cancerous tumor that was causing him a great deal of pain.  K9 Cody was a great asset to the Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division and the citizens of Fresno County.  After retiring from service in 2013, he lived a happy life with Detective Ramiro Rodriguez and his family.

K9 Cody was originally a pound dog.  The Sheriff’s Office later acquired the half Pit Bull, half Black Lab from L.A. Master K9 in southern California.  Cody would go on to serve the Sheriff’s Office for eight years and work with three different handlers. He spent the majority of his career with Detective Rodriguez.

K9 Cody was utilized for search warrants, parcel investigations, highway interdiction, prison and jail searches.  He also represented our department at numerous elementary school presentations.

Here are some of K9 Cody’s career seizure statistics which demonstrate his outstanding work.

-Cocaine: 12 lbs.

-Meth: 62 lbs.

-Marijuana: 359 lbs.

-Heroin: 28 lbs.

-Opium: 5 lbs.

-More than $5 million in U.S. currency.

Needless to say, K9 Cody was a valued and loved member of our team and will be sorely missed.

In January, the Sheriff’s Office added two dogs to its K-9 Unit, which allowed it to return to a full staff of nine canine teams.
