An ambulance transported a man to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno Monday after he received severe injuries in a car crash near E. Clinton and N. Ashley Way in Fresno.
The suspect was taken into surgery and later died. The Coroner’s Office has identified him as 39-year-old Jose Campana Ontiveros. He is from Mexico, but had been staying in Fresno.
Just before 6:30 am, Fowler Police responded to a reported domestic violence call at a business along the 3100 block of E. Manning Ave. in the City of Fowler. The victim said she arrived at work and the suspect, her former boyfriend, was at the location waiting for her. The suspect assaulted the woman and fired multiple rounds at her, then fled the location in a car. She was not injured.

Law enforcement agencies were notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Around 7:15, a Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy saw the suspect’s car in the area of Chestnut and Clinton in Fresno. The suspect noticed the deputy as well and immediately increased his speed to get away from the patrol car. The deputy saw the suspect throw a gun out of the window of his car along the 4800 block of Yale Ave. The deputy activated his lights and sirens and continued to follow the vehicle. The suspect reached a speed of approximately 75 mph. The suspect later crashed into a fence and parked vehicle at a car rental business near Clinton and Ashley. The deputy detained the suspect and paramedics rushed him to the hospital. Detectives recovered the discarded handgun, which was determined to be stolen.
