7/11/16 - The Coroner’s Office has released the name of the victim. She is Cheiann Berry, 14, of Torrance, CA.
7/9/16 - Shortly after 3:00 pm on Saturday, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a boating accident, which left a 14 year old girl seriously injured.
The victim was at E. Saginaw Ave. and Road 38 in Reedley (near Lindy’s Landing & Campground).
A preliminary investigation shows the girl was being towed behind a boat, riding an inner tube. While the driver of the boat was making a turn, the teenager was eject from the tube and struck a tree on the shoreline of the Kings River. This was in an area of the river southeast of the intersection of E. Rose Ave. and E. Floral Ave. Deputies and emergency medical services personnel came to her aid near Lindy’s Landing and she was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Her injuries proved to be too serious and she later passed away. Her name is not available for release at this time.
The driver of the boat is an adult man who is a relative of the victim. They are both residents of southern California. The driver of the boat has been interviewed and is being cooperative. At this time, he is not facing any criminal charges. This remains an ongoing investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to exercise caution when recreating on waterways. Always be aware of your surroundings while operating a watercraft, don’t speed, keep a safe distance from other watercrafts, wear life jackets and don’t drink and drive.
