California State Parks at Millerton Lake State Recreation Area will celebrate its inaugural Kids’ Safety Day Saturday, July 18, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event is intended to encourage water safety for children while recreating at parks, rivers, and lakes in the Central Valley by wearing a life jacket and swimming safe.
Children ages 12 years old and younger are invited to attend with their parents at the Grange Grove Picnic Grounds on the South Shore area of the park. The community will have an opportunity to learn from and talk with representatives from public safety agencies and organizations from throughout the San Joaquin Valley about being safe in the water and what to do in case of an emergency.
Children can expect to meet rescuers such as State Park Rangers and Lifeguards, Sheriff deputies with the Search and Rescue and Dive Teams from Fresno and Madera counties, Cal Fire firefighters, California Highway Patrol helicopter pilots and flight nurses, Naval Air Station Lemoore search and rescue sailors, Sky Life pilots and flight nurses, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers and more. Come see the patrol boats, helicopters, fire engines and police cars and trucks used to keep our lakes and waterways safe.
The California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways will be hosting a life jacket trade-in station. Anyone who brings an unserviceable life jacket to the event will be given a brand new life jacket in return.
Valley Children’s Hospital and the Water Safety Council of Fresno County are partners with California State Parks for this event. This event is sponsored by the California State Lifeguard Association.
Standard day use parking fees of $10 per vehicle apply. Lunch will be provided for children 12 years old and younger.
