The Fresno County Sheriff's Office is pleased to introduce its newest member of the Mounted Patrol Unit. He is an eight year old sorrel colored gelding and he has just received the name of Justice. Sheriff Margaret Mims chose the name following a campaign earlier this year where the public suggested names online to our office. Sheriff Mims received a lot of great names to choose from and truly appreciates the community’s participation.
Justice is already proving to be a valuable asset to the Sheriff’s Office, not just for his patrol work, but also for his personality. Some of his friendly skills include being able to take a bow, smile and count. We see Justice as a great mascot for our agency and we are excited to have him. The public will have opportunities to meet him throughout the year as he works patrol assignments and attends events. You can follow Justice on his very own Instagram page by typing in “Justice The Sheriff Horse.” We encourage the public to share their experiences and post photos online they take with him using the hashtag #justicethesheriffhorse. Here is a direct link to the page. https://www.instagram.com/justicethesheriffhorse/
Justice helped make his first arrest on June 29th, 2017. Just before 11:30 am, Mounted Patrol deputies were doing a routine check of Courthouse Park when they were flagged down for a disturbance. Deputies rode to the northwest corner of the park and actually found an armed robbery taking place. Deputies saw the suspect armed with what appeared to be a metal pipe and he was using it to try and steal property from the victim. The suspect refused to follow the deputies’ directions and became combative. While still mounted on their horses, deputies attempted to strike the suspect with their batons in order to make him drop the pipe, but they were unable to make contact. Deputy Christian Lightner, who was riding Justice, used his horse to pin the suspect against a bench. This allowed Deputy Lightner to get off his horse and grab hold of the suspect. The suspect continued to be combative and resist, but deputies who work in the court quickly came over to help and they took the suspect into custody. Deputies recovered the weapon, which was a wooden stick painted a dark grey color to resemble a pipe.
The suspect, 31 year old David Harris of Fresno, was booked into the Fresno County Jail. He faces felony charges of robbery, resisting arrest and drug possession. He remains in jail with a bail amount set at $40,500.
Anyone with additional information on David Harris is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (559) 600-3111 or Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867. You will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
