On June 12, 2018, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $325,969 in state grant funding from California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to combat the illegal sale of cigarettes and tobacco products to minors. The grants, $37.5 million in total, were distributed to 71 local entities throughout the state. They will fund operations, retailer training programs, the installation of signage, youth outreach, tobacco retail license inspections, training for sworn personnel and other activities.
"Tobacco remains a very serious public health concern,” said Attorney General Becerra. “These grants will provide additional tools to law enforcement to help educate kids about the dangers of smoking. The grants will also help local communities enforce laws against selling tobacco products to minors. These grants are an important step toward reducing illegal sales and building a healthier California.”
Proposition 56 (Prop. 56), the California Healthcare, Research and Prevention Tobacco Tax Act of 2016, was approved by voters in November 2016. Effective April 2017, it raised the cigarette tax by $2.00 per pack, with an equivalent increase on other tobacco products. Prop. 56 specifically allocates $30 million of revenue to be distributed annually by the California Department of Justice to local law enforcement agencies for the support and hiring of peace officers for various activities, including investigations intended to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors.
This year’s Prop. 56 grant recipients will use the state dollars to fund different anti-smoking campaigns and projects including new training and educational materials for officers and tobacco sellers to reduce illegal sales of tobacco products to minors, and law enforcement operations targeted at retailers selling to minors. The recipients are among different cities, counties, school districts and sheriff/police departments. FRESNO, Calif., June 8, 2018 — The Fresno County Sheriff - Coroner’s Office has implemented a much-needed technology upgrade with FirstNet – a new lifesaving communications platform. FirstNet is the country’s first nationwide public safety communications platform dedicated to first responders – available when and where we need it. Being built with AT&T, in public-private partnership with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority), it gives our communications capabilities a major boost, providing a reliable, highly secure and “always-on” connection.
“We can’t predict when, where or what emergencies will happen. But whether it be a wildfire, earthquake or man-made disaster, it’s important that our deputies are equipped with the best technology possible to create the best response possible,” said Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims. “Moving to FirstNet puts us in the best position to do that. We chose to move to FirstNet as a proactive measure as it will allow us to deliver vital safety services to the public – today and well into the future.”
By subscribing to FirstNet, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies will be able to stay connected to the critical information they need. It will help ensure they can easily and quickly communicate with one another during everyday situations, big events or emergencies.
“It’s reassuring to know that in times of crisis, FirstNet will give us modernized, reliable communications capabilities to reach those in need and perform our jobs uninterrupted. This is a valuable tool that we hope all public safety agencies in California will consider implementing because when our communities rely on us most, life-saving resources should never be impacted by the limitations of commercial networks,” Sheriff Mims added.

Property crimes detectives with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office have arrested 20 year old Marcos Nanez of Fresno.
